Saying the Wrong ThingWell…this was awkward. Of course, with N, pretty much everything was awkward to some extent. But now, meeting Hilda in the Nimbasa Amusement Park after not seeing each other in nearly three years, things were especially awkward.
They were sitting on a bench, not saying anything. N looked at Hilda. Hilda looked at N. Then N looked away because the eye contact was making him uncomfortable. Then they just sat there in silence once more. N had been hoping that Hilda would bail him out by initiating the Chatting herself, but no luck so far.
What was he supposed to say? Um um um…
“I KNOW WHAT SEX IS NOW!” he blurted out quite a bit louder than he had been intending. Hilda stared. So did a lot of other people. Several mothers grasped tightly onto their kids’ hands and hurried out of the vicinity.
As soon as the words were out of N’s mouth, he knew that he’d Said The Wro
RehearsalsFrom the first, Concordia had been the sister who was most in charge of N’s upbringing. This was partly because she was the older sister, but mostly because she could think on her feet. Anthea was a sweet and wonderful person, but she wasn’t particularly clever. With N, one had to make decisions fast. This was especially true now that he was so much bigger than them. If he was allowed to throw a full-blown tantrum, there was a risk he could seriously injure one or both of the sisters without even trying before they could find Zoroark to calm and restrain him.
Today they were doing rehearsals for the coronation, and Concordia knew she had to be on her highest guard. It wasn’t a complicated plan…N was to walk straight up the carpeted walkway to the throne, where Ghetsis would crown him. But if there was even the smallest hitch during the actual event…to say Ghetsis would not be pleased was putting it lightly.
Bad CommunicationJack watched with amusement as Carly eagerly chowed down on the dill pickle that came with her sandwich, then asked for another one. Finally, intending it to be a joke, he asked, "So, are you pregnant or something?"
Carly's head immediately snapped up.
"N-no, how could I be when you've never laid a finger on me?! I just happen to like pickles!" she answered in a surprisingly angry voice.
"Okay, okay, jeez, it was just a joke," Jack muttered. Carly relaxed a bit, and everything might have been fine again, but Jack had to add, "Well, there could be another guy that I don't know about..."
"OH, OF COURSE!" Carly shouted. By now everyone at the other tables was looking at them. "There are SO MANY other men who want to have sex with me! Whenever I get back to m-my apartment after work, there's a WHOLE LINE of them that goes all the way around the b-block!"
And with that, she pushed back her chair so hard that it fell on the ground, stood up, and stormed away. Jack was completely clueless as
UnderstoodIt was Inventory Day. N always did Inventory on Tuesday, at precisely 2:00 in the afternoon. Any other day or time was just…wrong. The only Exceptions he allowed himself were if Ghetsis made him do something else during that time or if he was literally too sick to get out of bed. That was it.
But today there weren’t any Exceptions, so N could go ahead with inventory as planned.
First were the cars. He took them out of the clear plastic storage container one by one and carefully lined them up in front of the half-pipe. He had to make sure this line was as close to perfectly straight as he could manage.
N was very proud of his collection of toy cars. Right now he had exactly 137 of them. He had memorized this number the last time he’d gotten a new one, but he counted them all anyway as he lined them up…just in case.
One of his favorite games to play with the cars was Jail. N had no toys of humans, so the cars
